The San Mateo – Hayward Bridge (often just called the San Mateo Bridge ) spans the Bay of San Francisco and connects the city of Hayward with Foster City , a planned city founded in 1971 east of San Mateo . With a length of 11,265.41 meters, it is the longest of the five bridges in San Francisco Bay and in California at all. Its primary function is to connect Interstate 880 on the East Bay with US Highway 101 on the San Francisco Peninsula. It is largely used by commuters who live in the East Bay and work in Silicon Valley . Because of its parallel location to the Bay Bridge and the Dumbarton Bridge , it is sometimes used as an alternative route if there are major traffic jams on these bridges.
history
The original bridge, also known as the San Francisco Bay Toll Bridge , was built in 1929 and at the time of its completion it was the longest bridge in the world. It was replaced with a modern structure in 1967 and underwent extensive seismic retrofitting in 2000 to protect it from earthquake damage.
description
On average, 93,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. AC Transit operates a bus route across the bridge. The main span for shipping is 229 m with a vertical distance of 41 m.
PG&E high-voltage lines cross the bay parallel to the bridge and supply San Francisco and the peninsula with electricity.
Crossing the bridge from San Mateo to Hayward is free, in the opposite direction you have to pay 5 US dollars per two-axle vehicle.
