Foster City is a planned city built in the 1960s in San Mateo County in the US state of California , United States , with a population of around 34,412 (as of 2017). The metropolitan area has a size of 51.6 km², of which 81 percent is water, and is 35.1 km southeast of the city of San Francisco on the San Francisco Peninsula and on the Bay of San Francisco . The San Mateo – Hayward Bridge , which runs across the bay, connects Foster City directly with the city of Hayward .
