Life Technologies ( NASDAQ : LIFE) was one of the world's largest biotechnology companies based in Carlsbad , California , United States . In 2011, Life employed approximately 10,400 people and had sales of $ 3.7 billion. Life owned more than 4,000 patents and licenses and offered over 50,000 products in the medical and basic research market. Life Technologies has been part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Group since 2014 .

Applied Biosystems provides research equipment for genotyping , genetic and forensic DNA analysis, food screening, animal health, pharmaceutical cleaning and analysis, PCR , influenza research, stem cell research and laser microdissection .

Ambion is Life's primary brand for RNA -based research. Ambion offers products for the isolation, detection, quantification, amplification and characterization of RNA (from bacteria , tissue, cells, yeast, blood etc.). In addition, synthesized RNA is offered.

Gibco produces materials and solutions for cell culture .

Invitrogen is Life's main brand for molecular biology applications based on DNA ( genome , drug, proteome research , cellular analysis).

Molecular Probes provides fluorescence labeling and detection products for cell biology , nanotechnology and antibody laboratories .

Novex is the main brand for protein research and offers products for the purification, isolation, quantification and analysis of proteins ( SDS-PAGE , antibody technology, western blot ).

TaqMan offers research products for gene expression ( RT-PCR ), miRNA , protein analysis, SNP genotyping.

Ion Torrent is the first commercial ion-semiconductor DNA sequencing system provider .

Company history

Life Technologies Inc. was founded as a subsidiary of Dexter Corp. 1983 through the merger of Bethesda Research Laboratories Inc. and GIBCO Corp. (Grand Island Biological Company) founded. In 2000 the company was bought by the smaller but financially strong Invitrogen , who later used the name Life Technologies for the entire group.

Life Technologies Incorporated was formed on November 21, 2008 through the merger of Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems.

On July 1, 2012, the company announced that it would take over Navigenics and thus expand into the field of molecular diagnostics.

On February 3, 2014, Thermo Fisher Scientific announced the acquisition of Life Technologies.
