The Invitrogen AG (former symbol of NASDAQ : IVGN) was a large multinational biotechnology -Unternehmen based in Carlsbad , California, United States. In November 2008, Invitrogen merged with Applied Biosystems to form Life Technologies . Life Technologies was acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2014 .
history
Invitrogen was founded in 1987 by Lyle Turner, Joe Fernandez and Willian McConnell, who registered their company as a public company in 1989 .
The company celebrated its first successes with sets for molecular cloning , in particular with the product “The Librarian” (for the production of cDNA libraries) and “FastTrack Kit” (for mRNA isolation from biological samples).
In 1998 the company had sales of $ 33 million and went public in 1999. As a result, Novatech , a leading company in the characterization of cloned proteins, was acquired. This was followed by the purchase of ResGen , a specialist in genome research and synthetic DNA chemistry.
The business area was expanded considerably in 2000 when Invitrogen acquired the competing company Life Technologies / GIBCO . Through numerous other mergers and acquisitions (including Molecular Probes , Panvera and BioSource) the company broadened its customer base and strengthened its portfolio of intellectual property (patents).
The company merger with Applied Biosystems, a manufacturer of DNA sequencing and PCR machines, enabled Invitrogen to double its size. Despite renaming the company to Life Technologies , the Invitrogen , Gibco and Applied Biosystems brands continued to be used in sales. On February 3, 2014, Thermo Fisher Scientific announced the acquisition of Life Technologies for approximately $ 13.6 billion. Even after that, many well-known names such as Gibco , Invitrogen , Ambion and Pierce , which formerly stood for independent companies, were retained for individual product lines.
