Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (for short: SIE , until April 2016 Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. ( SCEI )) is a subsidiary of the Japanese technology group Sony , which was founded on November 16, 1993 in Tokyo , Japan as Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). SIE conducts research, development , production and sales of hardware and software for handheld and stationary game consoles under the PlayStation brand . SIE operates several development studios around the world and also acts as a publisher for computer games on the PlayStation platforms for third-party manufacturers . The President and CEO of SIE is Jim Ryan .

history

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. was founded in 1993 by Sony and its subsidiary Sonic Music Entertainment Japan in order to advance the entry into the market for console games through this new subsidiary. This took place on December 3, 1994 with the release of the PlayStation .

Outside of Japan, Sony's video game activities initially took place entirely under the umbrella of the Sony Electronic Publishing division, which was founded in 1991 and is headquartered in New York under the direction of Olaf Olafsson . So it came about that the regional computer entertainment departments, which had been set up in 1994, were initially subordinate to the Electronic Publishing division. It was only after a restructuring in early 1997 that the computer entertainment companies for Europe and North America became direct subsidiaries of the Japanese SCEI.

As of April 1, 2016, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Sony Network Entertainment International Ltd. dissolved and replaced by the newly founded company Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE), which will be responsible for the PlayStation brand and all online services in the future. The company headquarters was relocated from Japan to the USA in San Mateo .

North America

Sony Interactive Entertainment of America (SIEA) was founded in May 1994 as a division of Sony Electronic Publishing. The management was initially with Stephen Race and the location was Santa Monica. During a reorganization in January 1997, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc., based in Foster City, was re-established as a 100% subsidiary of SCEI.

Europe

Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE), based in London, was founded in January 1995 as a division of Sony Electronic Publishing Ltd. Chris Deering was entrusted with the management ("President") . On April 1, 1997 it was restructured and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Ltd. newly set up as a 100% subsidiary of SCEI. Effective January 1, 2004, David Reeves was promoted to President and COO. Deering stayed with the company as chairman and CEO.

Germany

The German Sony Electronic Publishing in Neu-Isenburg operates as Sony Interactive Entertainment Deutschland GmbH (SIED). The German branch has been managed by Uwe Bassendowski since February 2005, initially in the position of Managing and Commercial Director, and since 2007 at the latest as Vice President Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

The German console market has traditionally been turned towards the PlayStation. After the games market in Germany was dominated by the PC for a long time, according to the company's own information as of November 2014 it is the second most important European market after Great Britain. This year the market share of all Sony platforms in the German game market was around 50% of total sales.

Studios

In September 2005, Ken Kutaragi announced that Sony's computer entertainment divisions would be integrated into a new studio, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. At the beginning they were supervised and coordinated by Phil Harrison . When he left the company in 2008, Shuhei Yoshida took over his position.

Products

PlayStation

The PlayStation was initially developed as an add-on for the Super Nintendo. After problems between Nintendo and Sony arose , Sony developed the PlayStation as an independent console. On 3 December 1994, the PlayStation first appeared in Japan, on September 9, 1995, the United States and in Europe on September 29, 1995. The alleged working title for the development of the system to PlayStation eXtreme have gelautet, then the shortcuts that PSX over Has been a common abbreviation for the console among gamers for years. It was only when the original model was replaced by the minor revision called PSOne by Sony that the abbreviation was largely replaced; later SCEJ even released a special variant of the PlayStation 2 in Japan under the official name PSX, which finally made the abbreviation for the original PlayStation obsolete. To date, the PlayStation / PSone has sold over 100 million units. This made the Sony PlayStation the best-selling console until the appearance of its successor, the PlayStation 2 .

In 1999 Sony announced the PlayStation 2 as the successor to the PSone with promising demos and trailers . It is powered by the Emotion Engine - CPU and the GPU " Graphics Synthesizer ". Launched on March 4, 2000 in Japan, the PS2 had to take criticism from game manufacturers due to its high demands on game programming and the games did not initially meet expectations. But broad third-party support, DVD playback options, downward compatibility and the time advantage over the competition favored the PS2 and it has been able to sell 150 million times so far.

PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 was first introduced on May 16, 2005, at E3 . A cell processor was used as the CPU , which was developed in cooperation with IBM , Toshiba and Sony . The GPU , the RSX (Reality Synthesizer) , was designed by Nvidia .

PlayStation 4

On February 20, 2013 Sony presented the PlayStation 4 for the first time. This is based on a main processor and graphics processor from AMD . The console was first launched on November 15, 2013 in North America and two weeks later in Europe, with the release in Japan on February 22, 2014.

PlayStation 5

According to Sony, the PS5 should come on the market for Christmas 2020. It is the successor to the PlayStation 4, with which there should be backward compatibility.
