SIE Santa Monica Studio (trading as Santa Monica Studio, LLC) is an American computer game developer and part of SIE Worldwide Studios , owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment . The company, founded in 1999 is known for the development of God-of-War - series and is based in California, Los Angeles .

history

The Santa Monica studio team behind God of War at the 2019 Game Developers Choice Awards .

The studio was founded in 1999 by Allan Becker in Santa Monica as a first-party developer for Sony. Becker wanted to set up a development studio away from Sony's company headquarters and ultimately decided on the Santa Monica location. The local separation from the head office should create an open and collaborative working atmosphere. The aim was to develop a game for the not yet released PlayStation 2 . The racing game Kinetica was developed together with David Jaffe and published in 2001. Based on this game engine , the studio in the following years, developed the first game of the God-of-War - series. After the success of the first God of War in 2005, production of God of War II began . The game was developed for the PlayStation 2, although the PlayStation 3 was already on the market about half a year before the game was released. This led to some discussion in the development team and at Sony. The final decision came from Sony President Shūhei Yoshida . Three years later, in March 2010, the successor God of War III was released for the PlayStation 3 under the leadership of Stig Asmussen . The latest part, God of War , was accompanied by Cory Barlog as Game Director and was released in April 2018 for the PlayStation 4 .

In addition to working on God of War , the studio also supports smaller second-party developers who want to publish games for Sony's game consoles . These include Flower and Journey from indie developer thatgamecompany as well as Giant Sparrows The Unfinished Swan and What Remains of Edith Finch .

In 2014, the company moved from the eponymous Santa Monica to neighboring Playa Vista.
