Game Developers Choice Awards

The Game Developers Choice Awards have been presented since 2001 at the Game Developers Conference by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) in San José , California. Only regular members, i.e. game developers, are permitted for both nomination and voting. The award ceremony will be accompanied by online media.

From 1997 to 1999 the Spotlight Awards were presented at the Game Developers Conference . Since 2010, the Game Developers Choice Online Awards , which focus on online games, have continued to exist as a supplement .

Award

game of the year

This award recognizes a title in its entirety.

Audio

Aspects such as music and sound effects are included in the award of this prize.

Game design

Winners of this award are praised for their game mechanics, puzzles, game balance, scenarios and the like.

technology

This award praises the technical aspects of a game, such as the graphics engine , the physics engine , and artificial intelligence .

Visual design

This award honors visual highlights in terms of animation , modeling , textures and graphic style.

script

This award goes to games that excelled in the areas of plot, plot structure, dialogues and narrative text.

innovation

The prize for innovation is awarded to up to three games that represent actual innovations and advance the video game medium as an art form.

Lifetime Achievement Award

This prize is awarded for life's work.

Pioneer Award (until 2007: The First Penguin Award)

This prize is intended to honor developers who have successfully broken new, risky paths with their work and thus served as a source of inspiration for subsequent game developments (English pioneer: pioneer). Until 2007, the prize was called The First Penguin Award (in German: The first penguin ). This was inspired by the children's book Mr. Popper's Penguins and alluded to the observation that Adelie penguins usually jump into the water in groups, where one of them has to take the first step.

Ambassador Award

(Engl. With the Ambassador Award ambassador: Ambassador), persons awarded that have contributed significantly to improving the state of the computer games industry.

This price rated ( unlicensed ) characters in games. The criteria for this included originality, emotional depth and character development.

Best new developer studio

IGDA Award for Community Contribution

This award recognizes notable contributions to building a game development community, disseminating knowledge, and advocating on behalf of other developers.

Maverick Award

A Maverick (in English: outsider ) is awarded to a developer who has shown stubbornness and has experimented with alternative or new concepts.
