Sid Meier (born February 24, 1954 in Sarnia , Canada ) is a Canadian programmer and designer of computer games . As the creator of the Civilization computer game series and co-founder of the game development company MicroProse , Meier was one of the most influential game designers, especially in the 1980s and 1990s.

Life

Sid Meier grew up in Detroit and studied history and computer science at the University of Michigan and used his Atari 800 to pursue his hobby of programming games. In 1981, Sid Meier first met Bill Stealey , who also had a soft spot for computer games. A short time later, the common idea arose to sell their own computer games, and so they founded the MicroProse company in 1982.

Despite the successful games, MicroProse ran into financial difficulties. In 1994, MicroProse was bought by Spectrum HoloByte , and Bill Stealey left the company he had co-founded ten years earlier. But MicroProse's financial slump was unstoppable. In 1996, Sid Meier and Jeff Briggs also left the company and started a new company, Firaxis Games .
