Firaxis Games is a computer game developer from the USA and was founded by Sid Meier and Jeff Briggs in 1996 after they left their old company MicroProse . In 2005, Firaxis was bought by Take 2 Interactive and has been part of its publishing label 2K Games ever since . Firaxis Games primarily develops strategy games , especially global strategy games .

Firaxis has developed and published over a dozen games, including Sid Meier's Gettysburg! and Sid Meier's Antietam! about the battles of the American Civil War . SimGolf was a co-production with Will Wright , best known for SimCity and The Sims . Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is a game about the colonization of the fictional planet "Chiron" in the Alpha Centauri system . Firaxis Games became best known for the Civilization series launched by Sid Meier , which now consists of seven parts.

The latest releases from Firaxis Games include new editions of the classic Pirates! (November 2004) and Colonization (September 2008) as well as Civilization: Beyond Earth (October 2014), XCOM 2 (February 2016) and Civilization VI (October 2016).
