history

1993 to 2004

Take 2 was founded in New York in 1993 by Ryan Brant, the son of Peter Brant . In March 1998, Take 2 acquired the BMG Interactive division of Bertelsmann AG for 14.2 million US dollars. At the end of 1998, BMG Interactive was renamed Rockstar Games . In the same year, Take 2 took over the video game distributor Jack of All Games , which was founded in 1990 by David Rosenbaum. As early as 1999, the developer association Gathering of Developers published games via Take 2, in May 2000 Take 2 took over Gathering of Developers completely. In the following months, Take 2 shortened the name to Gathering and released various games of the merger such as Max Payne and Tropico . Gathering also served as a brand for other publications in the future. In the same year, the American development studio PopTop Software was also acquired by Take 2.

At the end of 2002, the publisher Global Star Software became part of Jack of All Games and thus of Take 2. From mid-2003, Global Star Software's business was fully integrated into Take 2 itself and managed from its New York headquarters.

In September 2004, Gathering was fully integrated into Global Star Software and given up as a separate brand. Two months later, in November 2004, Take 2 paid Atari SA $ 22.3 million to obtain the rights to the Civilization series. At the same time, Take 2 announced a long-term partnership with Civilization developer Firaxis and its influential game designer Sid Meier . In addition, Take 2 secured Sega's sports division at the same time . Take 2 took over Visual Concepts including all trademarks and rights such as the ESPN license for around 24 million US dollars . With the purchase, Take 2 also founded the 2K Sports label , through which all of the company's sports games should be published in the future.

2005 until today

Further acquisitions of companies followed in 2005. These included the development studios Kush Games , Irrational Games and Firaxis and also the Gaia Capital Group . Overall, Take 2 spent $ 80 million on acquisitions within a year.

Also in 2005, Take 2 founded the label 2K Games , in which all games that did not fit the 2K Sports label should be published in the future. Thus the games planned for Global Star Software no longer appeared above, but via 2K Games. In 2007, Global Star Software was renamed 2K Play to market casual games.

As part of internal restructuring and the increased focus on video games sold Take 2 in September 2007 with Joytech a manufacturer for consoles - peripherals such as gamepads and steering wheels on Mad Catz .

In February 2008, it was announced that competing company Electronic Arts had offered Take 2's board of directors $ 25 per share to acquire the company. Electronic Arts later raised the offering to $ 26 per share. The bid was 63 percent above the price of the share on the stock exchange. A few weeks earlier, rumors of a possible takeover had been circulating on the Internet. In May 2008 it was announced that Take 2 and Electronic Arts could not agree and the talks were discontinued.

From September 2008, Take 2 outsourced the distribution of its games to Ditan Distribution and finally sold the in-house distributor Jack of All Games to Synnex in December 2009 for 43.25 million US dollars .

In January 2013, Take 2 secured the rights to the WWE game series from the insolvent THQ . In March 2013, Take 2 announced that in addition to the previously announced titles Grand Theft Auto V and Agent, other titles could be expected in the near future. In 2016, the stock climbed to 38 euros each and brought Take-Two Interactive $ 268 million in profit, although there were no publications in the first quarter and the game Battleborn fell far short of expectations.
