Firefly Studios is an English game developer based in London who specializes in the development of computer strategy games .

The development company is best known for its medieval castle building simulations from the Stronghold series . The game and its successors sold over 6 million copies worldwide and received numerous awards.

Firefly was founded in August 1999 by Simon Bradbury , Eric Ouellette and David Lester. They had previously worked on several successful strategy games, including the Caesar and Lords of the Realm series .

The first title the studio developed was Stronghold in 2001, for which Gathering of Developers could be won as publisher and Take 2 Interactive as distributor . The game received consistently positive reviews.

In September 2002, the first successor to the castle building simulation, Stronghold Crusader , appeared, which relocated the game's setting to the Middle East at the time of the Crusades .

After nearly five years of existence, Firefly expanded to the other side of the Atlantic in February 2004 and opened a development studio in Canton , Connecticut , USA . The US studio is busy developing another strategy game.

Stronghold 2 was released on April 22, 2005 in the United States and Great Britain and on April 29 in Germany . It offers 3D graphics and adds various features to the concept of Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader . The Take-2 label 2K Games was responsible as the publisher.

Stronghold Legends appeared in 2006 , for the first time with fantasy creatures such as giants or werewolves, but is essentially based on Stronghold 2 and is strongly based on the Arthurian legend. There are also three different races with partly different units. For the first time there are also heroes who have special abilities - these can e.g. B. Summon Knights. There is a new game mode in multiplayer - King of the Hill - whereby a certain point on the map must be protected from enemies for as long as possible.

In 2011, Firefly released Stronghold 3 , which is more based on the first series title, but was criticized by critics and fans as "unfinished" when it was released due to numerous bugs. In May 2012, Stronghold 3 Gold was an improved and expanded version of the game that buyers of the original version could download for free. The paid extension Blackstaff appeared in 2012 in the form of downloadable content (DLC) via the Steam distribution platform , which also functions as DRM .

In October 2012 Firefly announced that it would develop another offshoot of the Stronghold series with Stronghold Crusader 2 . In November 2012, Stronghold HD and Stronghold Crusader HD , patches for the two classics with, among other things, a higher resolution, were released. Stronghold Crusader 2 was released in September 2014. In addition, another part of the series was announced under the title Stronghold: Warlords , which should appear in 2020.
