Stronghold Crusader Extreme is a medieval castle and economy simulation by British game developer Firefly Studios for Windows that was released on May 27, 2008.

Stronghold Crusader Extreme represents the fifth part of the Stronghold series and is a modified re- edition of Stronghold Crusader from 2002. Besides minor changes in content, it offers a significantly increased level of difficulty, which should be a new challenge even for experienced Stronghold players. In addition, Stronghold Crusader Extreme contains the content of Stronghold Warchest , an expansion only released in North America.

Gameplay

The core of the game principle was taken from Crusader . The first major major innovation is the possibility of mass battles of up to 10,000 units. The faster construction of a correspondingly large armed force is made possible by a new type of building, the so-called outpost. These cannot be built by the player himself in normal modes; they are already distributed on the map before the game. Depending on the setting and execution, the outpost can regularly create new troops of a type free of charge at regular short intervals. The second major innovation is a self-regenerating command bar, with which special actions, such as a hail of arrows or the creation of free troops, can be triggered. The longer you wait, the stronger actions can be obtained.

Missions

In addition to the Skirmish mode known from Crusader , Crusader Extreme brings a so-called extreme crusade, which consists of a total of 20 newly designed individual missions. This represents the core of the game and is characterized by a very high level of difficulty right from the start. A campaign with a special plot comparable to the other parts of the series is not included.

publication

The game was officially released on May 27, 2008. The current version of the original game has also been added to the original edition. Initial problems with the large numbers of troops were resolved over time with patches. At the end of 2012, like Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader , it received an HD patch that upgrades the graphics resolution to modern standards. In July 2017 the patch 1.4.1-E was released, which contains bug fixes and allows further higher resolutions to be selected.

reception

The game is said to have lost its appeal, especially in the battles, which have become too confusing due to their size. (Metacritic: 45 out of 100). Many trade magazines described the new missions as "unplayable" and "unfair" and therefore gave very low ratings compared to the other parts of the game. In addition to these points of criticism related to the principle of the game, a price that was perceived as inappropriate for the few changes - especially with regard to the almost six year old graphics - caused dissatisfaction.
