history
Ulta Salon, Cosmetics and Fragrance was founded by Richard E. George, former President of Osco Drug , and Terry Hanson. George left Osco in 1989 to start his own company. His business plan included a new approach to retail that offers high quality and affordable products. Other Osco executives joined George and Hanson, raised $ 11.5 million in venture capital, and officially launched Ulta in 1990. Initially similar to a drugstore , the business concept was revised in 1994 and the products and articles typical for drugstores such as toothbrushes and medicines were eliminated and mainly beauty products were offered.
The company has been listed on the stock exchange since October 25, 2007. In 2013, Ulta opened 125 stores in the US, increasing the number of locations to 675 stores. In 2017 the company was renamed from Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance to Ulta Beauty. By 2018 the number of locations had risen to 1,124 stores. Ulta Beauty has more than 20,000 products, including makeup, fragrances, and nail, skin and hair products, making it the largest company of its kind in the United States.
On May 31, 2019, General Manager Mary Dillon announced that Ulta Beauty plans to open stores overseas, starting with store openings in Canada .
