Illumina is a US manufacturer of genetic engineering equipment based in San Diego . The company was founded in 1998 and went public in 2000. From 1999 to late 2016, Illumina was headed by Jay Flatley.

In 2007 Illumina took over Solexa .

Illumina has a 71% market share in automated sequencing . Like Sanger sequencing, the sequencers detect using sequencing-by-synthesis (SBS).
