Automatic Data Processing, Inc. is an American company in Roseland in the US state of New Jersey .

ADP employs around 58,000 people worldwide. With around 620,000 customers, ADP is one of the world's largest independent IT service companies and is a leading provider of HR services such as payroll , time recording and travel expense management. In fiscal 2013, ADP had worldwide sales of $ 11 billion. The company consists of two business units: ADP Employer Services and ADP Dealer Services. With more than 540,000 customers, ADP Employer Services is the significantly larger of the two business areas. According to the company, every fifth payroll accounting in Germany is carried out using ADP products.

ADP's German headquarters are located in Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt am Main . The European headquarters are in Paris.

history

In 1949, Henry Taub and his brother Joe Taub founded Automatic Payrolls, Inc. as a payroll agency in Paterson, New Jersey. A little later, Frank Lautenberg , who took over the company's management board in 1952, joined the company. He was with the company for thirty years until he was elected to the US Senate in 1982 .

In 1957 the company began mainframes and punch cards for the pay slips to use and named in Automatic Data Processing, Inc. has to offer. In 1961, the company went public with 300 customers, 125 employees and sales of around $ 400,000. In 1965 ADP opened a branch in the UK and in 1974 acquired Time Sharing Limited (TSL) , a pioneer in digital computing at the time.

In 1985 ADP's annual sales exceeded $ 1 billion for the first time. At that time, the company was already responsible for ten percent of payroll in the United States. In the 1990s, ADP concentrated more on offering its customers business process outsourcing . ADP also continued to expand in the European market and acquired numerous companies in the UK, Germany, France and other countries.
