Life

Lautenberg, son of poor Jewish immigrants, attended Nutley High School and then served in World War II. After the war he studied economics at Columbia Business School . He then co-founded Automatic Data Processing and became its chairman.

From 1982 to 2001 he was the first Senator for the state of New Jersey . Previously this seat was held by Harrison A. Williams , also a member of the Democratic Party. In 2000 Lautenberg announced his retirement as senator, followed the following year by Democrat Jon Corzine . In 2002 he was nominated for the second senatorial post in New Jersey after the previous Democratic incumbent Robert Torricelli was embroiled in a corruption scandal. He won the 2002 election against Republican Douglas Forrester . On November 4, 2008, he was re-elected as a senator; he prevailed with 55.5 percent of the vote against former Republican Congressman Dick Zimmer (42.5%). An important aspect of his political work was the campaign for the release of Jews in the Soviet Union. The Lautenberg Amendment passed in October 1989 made it much easier for Jews to emigrate from what was then the USSR. Since 2011 he had campaigned for the revision of the chemicals regulation . At his death, Lautenberg was the oldest member of the United States Senate.

Frank Lautenberg had four children from his first divorced marriage with Lois Lautenberg. In 2001 he married Bonnie S. Englebardt. He owned a summer residence on Martha's Vineyard . He died at the age of 89 on June 3, 2013 in Manhattan .

During his tenure, Lautenberg campaigned massively for rail projects and commuter issues. The Frank R. Lautenberg Station in Secaucus is named after him. After the funeral service, his body was transferred to Washington from the station named after him on an Amtrak train.
