James Edgar Martine
James Edgar Martine (born August 25, 1850 in New York City , New York , † February 26, 1925 in Miami , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1917 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US Senate .
Career
As early as 1857, James Martine and his parents came to Plainfield , New Jersey, where he attended public schools. He then worked in agriculture as well as in the real estate and construction industries. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Plainfield Borough Council and ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor there. In 1906 he also ran unsuccessfully for a seat in Congress .
In the elections of 1910 Martine was elected as his party's candidate to the US Senate, where he succeeded John Kean on March 4, 1911 . Until March 3, 1917, he was able to complete a six-year term in the Senate. In the meantime he headed the Committee on Coast Defenses. He was also a member of the Committee on Industrial Expositions , which no longer exists today and which only existed between 1899 and 1921. During his time in the Senate, the 16th and 17th amendments were passed . It was about the collection of income taxes and the direct election of US Senators.
In 1916, James Martine was not re-elected. After leaving Congress, he resumed his previous activities. He died in Miami on February 26, 1925 and was buried in Plainfield.
