Jacob W. Miller

Jacob Welsh Miller (born August 29, 1800 in German Valley, Morris County , New Jersey , †  September 30, 1862 in Morristown , New Jersey) was an American politician of the Whig Party . He represented the state of New Jersey in the US Senate for twelve years .

Jacob Miller, who was born in German Valley (now part of Washington Township , New Jersey), attended public schools in his home community, then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1823, whereupon he began practicing law in Morristown. In 1825 he married Mary Louisa Macculloch, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. One of their nine children was Lindley Miller, who served as an officer in the Union Army in the Civil War and commanded a regiment of African Americans .

Jacob Miller's political career began in 1832 when he was elected to the General Assembly , the lower house of the New Jersey state legislature. From 1838 to 1840 he was a member of the State Council , the predecessor of the New Jersey Senate . Finally, he was elected to the US Senate in Washington, DC in 1840 to represent the Whigs ; six years later he was re-elected, so that he could remain in the Senate until March 3, 1853. During this time he was, among other things, chairman of the Committee on the District of Columbia .
