Nicholas Frederick Brady (born April 11, 1930 in New York City ) is a former American politician of the Republican Party . He represented the state of New Jersey in the US Senate and was Treasury Secretary of the United States under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush . He became known through the draft of the so-called Brady Plan in March 1989.

He graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts (1952) and then from Harvard University with an MBA (1954). He and his wife Katherine have four children together.

Brady's political career began when he was named a U.S. Senator for New Jersey to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Senator Harrison A. Williams . He held this post only briefly, from April 20, 1982 to December 27, 1982, although he did not seek re-election. During his time in the Senate, he was a member of the Armed Forces Committee .

In 1984 President Reagan appointed him chairman of a presidential commission ( Commission on Executive, Legislative and Judicial Salaries ). He also worked on the Presidential Commission on Strategic Armed Forces (1983), the National Bipartite Commission on Central America (also 1983), the Commission on Security and Economic Assistance (1983) and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Defense Management (1985). He also chaired the Presidential Task Force on Market Mechanisms (1987).

Brady became the 68th Treasury Secretary of the United States on September 15, 1988. In 1989, following a series of years in which many developing countries were unable to pay their international debts (including United States partner Mexico ), he developed the so-called Brady Plan to help developing countries dollar- denominated Sell Bonds ( Brady Bonds ) internationally.

Brady's banking career spanned 34 years. During this time he joined Dillon, Read and Company, Inc. in New York in 1954 and became its chairman. He was also a director of NCR Corporation , MITER Corporation and HJ Heinz Company, among others . Brady is also the founder and chairman of Darby Overseas Investments, Ltd. , Washington DC, a mutual fund founded in 1994.

He also acted as trustee at Rockefeller University in New York and was a member of the Board of the Economic Club of New York .

In 2000 Brady became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
