Daniel Manning (born May 16, 1831 in Albany , New York , † December 24, 1887 ibid) was an American journalist, businessman, democratic politician and finance minister .

Family and career

Coming from a modest family background, Manning left school at the age of eleven in order to support his family financially through work. First he was a page in the New York State Assembly , where he later worked as a stenographer . He was then a reporter for several newspapers in his hometown, before he switched to the "Albany Argus" as a reporter in 1856 , where he became editor in 1865 and finally in 1873 became owner and president. In the same year he became vice president and then in 1881 president of the National Commercial Bank in Albany.

Political career

Democratic Party official

Manning began his political career as a supporter of the Governor of New York , Samuel J. Tilden . From 1874 to 1880 he was a member, then secretary for a year and finally chairman of the Democratic Party of New York from 1881 to 1884.

He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1876, 1880 and 1884 . In 1880 he was chairman of this meeting for the nomination of the then presidential candidate Winfield Scott Hancock .

Treasury Secretary under Cleveland

After Grover Cleveland was elected US President , he was appointed to the cabinet as Treasury Secretary on March 8, 1885 at the suggestion of Tilden, to the amazement of many .

Despite the public criticism, he quickly became one of the most important and influential advisers to the president. As a conservative financial politician, creating a budget surplus and increasing the gold reserve was particularly important to him. He also urged the president to reduce tariffs . However, his health deteriorated over the course of his tenure, so that many of the official business were already performed by his deputy Charles S. Fairchild . On March 31, 1887, he finally resigned because of his illness ( aneurysm ) and was replaced by Fairchild the following day.

In October 1887 he became President of the Bank of New York .
