William Windom (born May 10, 1827 in Belmont County , Ohio , † January 29, 1891 in New York City ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who was Treasury Secretary under three presidents of the Cabinet of the United States . He also represented the state of Minnesota in both houses of Congress .

Windom studied law , graduated in 1850, and was admitted to the bar. From 1852 he was a district attorney in Knox County. In 1855, Windom moved to the Minnesota Territory and settled in Winona . As a member of the Republican Party, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives and remained there from March 4, 1859 to March 3, 1869. When US Senator Daniel Sheldon Norton died in 1870, Windom was designated to be its Senate seat until a successor was elected to occupy. Windom exercised this mandate from July 15, 1870 to January 22, 1871 and was then replaced by Ozora P. Stearns . Since Stearns did not run for another term, Windom applied for the Senate seat. He was elected and was thus after his successful re-election in 1877 from March 4, 1871 to March 7, 1881 Senator of the United States again.

In March 1881, Windom resigned from his senatorial post to become Treasury Secretary in President James A. Garfield's cabinet ; after his death in September of the same year he kept his post under the successor Chester A. Arthur only for a short time. Windom resigned as a minister in November as he was re-elected to the United States Senate to fill the seat he left vacant. This time he represented his home state in the Senate from November 15, 1881 to March 3, 1883. Among other things, he was chairman of the influential Committee on Foreign Relations .

In 1883 he went to New York and practiced as a lawyer again. In 1889 he returned to politics and was reappointed Treasury Secretary in the cabinet of President Benjamin Harrison . He died during his tenure at the age of 64 and was buried in Rock Creek Cemetery , Washington .

Two parishes in Minnesota were named after him, Windom in Cottonwood County and Windom Township in Mower County . His image was used on United States silver certificates from 1891 to 1896.
