George MacKinnon
George Edward MacKinnon (born April 22, 1906 in Saint Paul , Minnesota , † May 1, 1995 in Potomac , Maryland ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1947 and 1949 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .
Career
After elementary school, George MacKinnon attended the University of Colorado at Boulder between 1923 and 1924 . After completing a law degree at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in his new profession. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1935 and 1942 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Minnesota ; there he was chairman of the legal committee. During World War II , he served in the US Navy between 1942 and 1946 .
In the 1946 congressional elections, MacKinnon was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded William Gallagher, who died in August 1946, on January 3, 1947 . In Congress he became a member of the Education and Labor Committee. Since he was defeated by the Democrat Roy Wier in the 1948 elections, he was only able to complete one term in the US House of Representatives until January 3, 1949.
Between 1953 and 1958, MacKinnon was a federal attorney for the Minnesota District. In 1958 he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Minnesota; he was defeated by the Democratic incumbent Orville Freeman . In 1960 and 1961 he worked for the US Department of Justice . He then worked as a consultant for Investors Mutual Funds between 1961 and 1969 . After the inauguration of Republican President Richard Nixon in 1969, McKinnon was appointed federal judge on appeals court appointed the District of Columbia. He held this office until his death in 1995. From 1979 to 1982 he was also the presiding judge of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review . Between 1985 and 1991 he was also a member of the United States Sentencing Commission .
George MacKinnon died in Potomac on May 1, 1995 and was buried in Long Lake, Minnesota. He was married to Elizabeth Valentine Davis since August 20, 1928. His daughter Catharine is a well-known suffragette in the United States.
