James McCleary

James Thompson McCleary (born February 5, 1853 in Ingersoll , Ontario , Canada , †  December 17, 1924 in La Crosse , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1907 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James McCleary graduated from Ingersoll High School and then studied at McGill University in Montreal . He later moved to Wisconsin, where he served as a school councilor in Pierce County . He then settled in Minnesota, where he also worked in various positions in the education sector.

Politically, McCleary became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1892 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded John Lind on March 4, 1893 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1907 . During this time the Spanish-American War fell . At that time the Philippines and the former Kingdom of Hawaii came under American administration.

In the elections of 1906 McCleary was defeated by the Democrat Winfield Scott Hammond . Between 1907 and 1908 he was head of department in the Federal Post Office. Between 1911 and 1920 he served as secretary of the American Iron and Steel Institute in New York City . McCleary then moved to Maiden Rock , Wisconsin, where he worked in agriculture. He then settled in Mill Valley ( California ). There he dealt with literary matters. In 1924 McCleary returned to Maiden Rock; he died on December 17th of the same year in La Crosse and was buried in Maiden Rock.
