Betty Louise McCollum (born July 12, 1954 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives since 2001 .

Career

Betty McCollum attended the College of St. Catherine at Saint Paul . After finishing school, she taught political science. She also worked in sales. McCollum has been politically active since 1986. She became a member of the Democratic Party , which in Minnesota merged into the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in 1944 . She was elected to the Saint Paul City Council three times. Between 1992 and 2001, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives .

In the 2000 congressional election, McCollum was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Minnesota . There she took over on January 3, 2001, succeeding the late Bruce Vento . After she was confirmed in the following elections, including the one in 2016, she can continue to exercise her mandate in Congress today. Her latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. Betty McCollum is considered progressive in Congress. She is or was a member of the grant committee . She used to be a member of the Budget Committee .

McCollum is divorced and has two children. In her private life she lives in Saint Paul.
