Henry M. Arens

Henry M. Arens (actually Heinrich Martin Arens ) (born November 21, 1873 in Bausenrode , today Finnentrop , † October 6, 1963 in Jordan , Minnesota ) was a German immigrant in the United States . There he was a farmer and politician. Among other things, he was temporarily Vice Governor of the state of Minnesota and a member of the House of Representatives of the United States .

Life

Arens was the later son of a farmer. He attended elementary school and the agricultural winter school in Fretter , directed by Johannes Dornseiffer . With no prospect of inheritance from his parents' farm, he emigrated to the USA in 1889 and went to live with an uncle in Jordan (Minnesota). After working in a butcher's shop , he bought his own farm there. He managed this until 1947. In addition, he was committed to the interests of farmers. He founded the local dairy organization and was its president. At the state level, he was Vice President of the Central Dairy Cooperatives. He was also the vice president of the Minnesota Ranchers Association. He was also active in local politics.

Arens was a member of the Minnesota Peasants and Workers' Party . For this he was elected to the House of Representatives of Minnesota in 1919, despite his German origins . He was a member of this until 1922. He was then a member of the state Senate from 1923 to 1930. In 1931 he became Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota. Since 1932 Arens was a member of the US House of Representatives for the Minnesota Farmer-Labor Party . He was a member until he was voted out of office in 1934. His attempt to move into the House of Representatives again in 1936 failed.

He remained connected to his home in the Sauerland region and visited his hometown twice after the Second World War.
