Edward John Thye (born April 26, 1896 near Frederick , South Dakota , † August 28, 1969 in Northfield , Minnesota ) was an American politician and belonged to the Republican Party .

Life

Thye was born near Frederick, South Dakota in 1896. A few years later, he and his family moved to Northfield, Minnesota. During the First World War he served in the United States Army Air Corps .

In 1942, Thye was elected Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota. When then Governor Harold Stassen resigned from office to join the United States Navy during World War II , Thye took over the office in 1943. In the gubernatorial election on November 7, 1944, he was confirmed as governor of the state and remained so until January 1947. In 1946 he was elected to the US Senate and represented Minnesota from January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1959. In 1958 he lost re-election against Eugene McCarthy .

Thye died on August 28, 1969 in Northfield, Minnesota and was buried in Oaklawn Cemetery there.
