Charles A. Gilman

Charles Andrew Gilman (born February 9, 1833 in Gilmanton , Belknap County , New Hampshire , †  June 7, 1927 in St. Cloud , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1880 and 1887 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Minnesota.

Career

Charles Gilman attended public schools in his home country. He later worked in New Hampshire as a Highway Surveyor for the Roads Department. From 1854 he lived first in Sauk Rapids (Minnesota) and from 1861 in St. Cloud. He first worked in the wood industry and then as a farmer. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1875, he began to practice this profession. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In Minnesota, he held a number of local offices at the county level. From 1861 he worked for the federal cadastral authority in St. Cloud. Gilman served in the Minnesota Senate in 1868 and 1869 ; from 1875 to 1879 and again between 1915 and 1916 he was a member of the House of Representatives of this state. During his first term in office, he was there as the successor to John L. Gibbs the Speaker of the Chamber.

In 1879, Gilman was elected Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota alongside John Sargent Pillsbury . He held this office between 1880 and 1887. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. From 1882 he served under the new governor Lucius Frederick Hubbard . Between 1894 and 1899 he was the State Librarian of Minnesota. He died on June 7, 1927 in St. Cloud.
