Joanell Dyrstad

Joanell M. Dyrstad (born October 15, 1942 in Saint James , Minnesota ) is an American politician . Between 1991 and 1995 she was Lieutenant Governor of the state of Minnesota.

Career

Joanell Sletta, her maiden name, grew up in Saint James and then spent most of her life in Red Wing . She graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter and Hamline University . She has been married since 1965; she has two grown children with her husband. The couple ran a pharmacy together. Politically, she joined the Republican Party , which was called the Independent Republican Party in Minnesota between 1975 and 1995 . Between 1985 and 1990 she held the office of Mayor of the City of Red Wing.

In 1990 Dyrstad was elected lieutenant governor of Minnesota alongside Arne Carlson . She held this office between 1991 and 1995. She was Deputy Governor . In 1994 she ran unsuccessfully in the primary of her party for nomination as a candidate for the US Senate . Her defeat in the primary was also linked to her Republican Party liberal views on abortion and gun control . Under certain conditions, she was in favor of the right to abortion and the restriction of private gun possession. After serving as Vice Governor, she became a board member of Fairview Health Services .
