Arne Carlson
Arne Helge Carlson (born September 24, 1934 in New York City ) is an American politician and was governor of the state of Minnesota from 1991 to 1999 .
biography
After serving on the Minneapolis City Council from 1965 to 1967 and running for Republican mayor without success in 1967, he was a member of the Minnesota state parliament for various constituencies from January 1971 to January 1979 . Since 1979 he has been an elected state auditor , making him head of the state agency responsible for auditing government spending. When he was just able to prevail in the 1990 election against Rudy Perpich , the Republican Carlson became the 37th governor of Minnesota on January 7, 1991 . After successful re-election in 1994, he did not run again in the following election in 1998 and was replaced by Jesse Ventura in January 1999 .
In September 2004, Carlson resigned from the Republican Party and declared himself independent from any political party.
