Samuel Rinnah Van Sant
Samuel Rinnah Van Sant (born May 11, 1844 in Rock Island , Illinois , † October 3, 1936 in Attica , Indiana ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Minnesota from 1901 to 1905 .
Early years
Samuel Van Sant attended public schools in his homeland. He then studied at Knox College for two years before joining his father's business, which built steamships. During the Civil War he was a corporal in an Illinois unit.
Political career
Van Sant became a member of the Republican Party . From 1893 to 1895 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Minnesota . In 1895 he succeeded William E. Lee as Speaker of this Chamber of Parliament. On November 6, 1900, he was elected the new governor of his state. He won 48.7 percent of the vote against the democratic incumbent John Lind . Van Sant took office on January 7, 1901. During his tenure, a tax reform was carried out and a control committee was set up. In 1904, Van Sant did not run for re-election. Therefore, he resigned on January 4, 1905 from his office.
Another résumé
After the end of his governorship, Van Sant withdrew from politics. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Veterans Association , which he served as director between 1909 and 1910. Governor Van Sant died on October 3, 1936. He had three children with his wife, Ruth Hall.
