Albert Harold Quie (* 18th September 1923 in Wheeling Township , Minnesota ) is a former American politician of the Republican Party . He was from 1958 to 1979 deputy in the US House of Representatives and from 1979 to 1983 Governor of the State of Minnesota.

Quie was born in 1923 on his parents' farm in Wheeling Township near Dennison . After serving as a pilot for the United States Navy during World War II , he graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in political science, which he graduated in 1950.

In 1954 Quie was elected to the Minnesota Senate. He was able to win an extraordinary election, made necessary by the death of Representative August H. Andresen in 1958 , and thus became a member of the US Congress . He was a member until 1979 when he became the 35th governor of Minnesota. In the gubernatorial election he prevailed with over seven percent advantage over the democratic incumbent Rudy Perpich . Four years later he did not run for re-election. Instead, he was appointed to the President's Advisory Board on Trade Relations. After the end of his political career, Quie became involved in Prison Fellowship , a Christian organization providing free criminal assistance, where he was vice president of the national association from 1987 to 1988.

Quie is married and has four children.
