James Wakefield

James Beach Wakefield (born March 21, 1825 in Winsted , Litchfield County , Connecticut , †  August 25, 1910 in Blue Earth , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives . He was also Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota from 1875 to 1877 .

Career

James Wakefield attended the public schools in Westfield ( Massachusetts ) and in Jonesville ( New York ). He then studied at Trinity College in Hartford until 1846 . After a subsequent law degree in Painesville ( Ohio ) and his admission to the bar in 1852, he began to work in this profession in Delphi ( Indiana ).

In 1854, Wakefield moved to Shakopee , Minnesota Territory . There he became the first probate judge in Faribault County . Politically, Wakefield was a member of the Republican Party . He was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1858, 1863, and 1866 ; In 1866 he succeeded Thomas H. Armstrong as the speaker of this Chamber of Parliament. Between 1867 and 1869 he was a member of the State Senate . From 1869 to 1875 he worked for the Federal Land Registry in Winnebago City . He was then between 1875 and 1877 Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota under Governors Cushman Kellogg Davis and John Sargent Pillsbury .

In the congressional elections of 1882 Wakefield was in the second electoral district of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC selected. There he took over from Horace B. Strait on March 4, 1883 , who moved to the third district. After re-election in 1884, Wakefield was able to serve two terms in Congress until March 3, 1887 . After his tenure in the House of Representatives, Wakefield withdrew from the public. He died in Blue Earth on August 25, 1910 and was buried in Painesville.
