John L. Gibbs

John La Porte Gibbs (born May 3, 1838 in Bradford County , Pennsylvania , †  November 28, 1908 in Owatonna , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Minnesota.

Career

John Gibbs attended public schools in his home country. He graduated from college in 1860. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his license to practice law in 1861, he began to work in Minnesota in this profession. For a short time he also taught as a teacher. He also worked as a farmer. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He has since served as a District Attorney in Freeborn County . Between 1864 and 1896 he sat several times as a member of the House of Representatives from Minnesota , whose speaker he was in 1877 and 1885. In 1887 he became a member of the Minnesota Railroad and Warehouse Commission .

In 1896, Gibbs was elected Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota alongside David Marston Clough . He held this office between 1897 and 1899. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He died in Owatonna on November 28, 1908.
