In the northeast, the community reaches a few hundred meters from the upper Saulx valley. topography

Located at the transition between the plateau-like landscapes of Barrois and Perthois , the 10.75 km² municipal area of Aulnois-en-Perthois shows only slight differences in altitude. However, some remaining holes from former limestone quarries are striking. One of these remaining holes - Mare Abotte - is filled with water. 146 hectares of the municipality (13.5%) are forested ( Bois Robin, Bois de Stainville, La Vermillère, Le Boistier, Bois de Saulx ).

history

The name of the place is derived from the Latin alnus for alder ; The place was first mentioned as Alnetus in 1402. The suffix en-Perthois was added in the late 18th century to distinguish the place from other communities of the same name. Parts of the village church of Saint-Martin could be dated to the 11th century. During the Ancien Régime , Aulnois was part of the Barony of Ancerville , later part of the Bailiwick of Bar-le-Duc and the Diocese of Toul . Limestone has been quarried around Aulnois since the Middle Ages. Its quality is said to have come close to Portland limestone . At the beginning of the 20th century, many of the more than 700 residents of the village were still working in the limestone quarries, which were gradually abandoned. After the decline of this industry, the population fell to 331 in 1975. The three last abandoned quarries Le Pu Portu, La Chopinotte and La Couleuvre can be visited southeast of the village center . The houses in the village are grouped along three streets that are connected to form an almost equilateral triangle. Continuing the northern tip of this triangle, a new village center was built in the middle of the 19th century with the Mairie and school building, a fountain and a lion statue reminiscent of the winter campaign of 1814 , to which the church and the old cemetery are also connected.

coat of arms

Blazon : "Diagonally divided by green and silver, each with an alder cone in mixed up colors, in the middle a red shield with five pinnacles, on top of which a silver goose head with a golden beak." The diagonal division symbolizes the quarries in which the stone blocks were once cut into slices. The shield in the middle represents the fortified village church with the battlements, the goose reminds of the church patron St. Martin. The coat of arms was created in January 2012 by Robert André Louis and accepted by the municipality.
