geography
The municipality of Nant-le-Grand is located on the Plateau du Barrois in the Barrois landscape in a side valley of the Saulx River , about 13 kilometers south of Bar-le-Duc and 18 kilometers east-northeast of Saint-Dizier . The 11.26 square kilometer municipal area is characterized by the narrow valley of the Ruisseau de Nant river and the partly wooded plateaus to the west and east of the valley, which tower over the river valley by 70 meters . In the north of the municipality, the Bois de Montromont forest area stretches across three dry valleys. In the northeast, at 351 meters above sea level, the highest point in the municipality is reached. Nant-le-Grand is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Tannois and Guerpont (point of contact) in the north, Tronville-en-Barrois and Velaines in the north-east, Ligny-en-Barrois and Maulan in the east, Nant-le-Petit in the south, and Stainville in the south-west as well as Montplonne to the west.
Place name
The name of the community comes from the Gallic “nanto”, which means a (often hidden) valley, a river or a stream. Derived from this, the toponyms nan, nans, nant or nanc occur frequently, especially in regions with limestone soils that are connected to more or less narrow and deep gorges. Examples are Nant , Nantua or Nancy .
