Naix-aux-Forges is a commune in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ) in north-eastern France . It is located in the valley of the Ornain River , eight kilometers from Ligny-en-Barrois .
history
Naix-aux-Forges was called Nasium in Roman times , founded in the 1st century BC. In its heyday, Nasium covered an area of 120 hectares and was next to Metz the largest settlement in what is now Lorraine. In the 2nd century AD the geographer Ptolemy mentioned it as one of the main places of the Leukes .
The statue of a fertility and mother goddess ( Latin Matrona ) and a Roman oculist stamp were discovered during the excavations and are now in the museum of Bar-le-Duc .
In the spring of 912 the Franconian King Theuderich II occupied the fortifications of Naix-aux-Forges during the campaign against his rival brother Theudebert II .
