geography

The Saulx in Rupt-aux-Nonains

The municipality of Rupt-aux-Nonains is located in the Barrois countryside on the Saulx River , about 16 kilometers south of Bar-le-Duc and 13 kilometers east-northeast of Saint-Dizier . The 20.4 square kilometer municipal area is characterized by the narrow Saulx valley and the partially wooded plateaus that rise north and south of the valley and tower over the river valley by 80 meters . The small Marne tributary Ornel rises in the forest area of Grand Bois de Rupt in the west of the municipality , which feeds several reservoirs used for fish farming ( Étang de la Carpière, Étang des Moines, Étangs Franchot ). The municipality includes the hamlets of La Houpette and Bayé, three kilometers southwest of the village of Rupt-aux-Nonains . Rupt-aux-Nonains is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bazincourt-sur-Saulx in the north-east and east, Lavincourt in the south-east, Aulnois-en-Perthois in the south, Cousances-les-Forges and Ancerville in the south-west, Sommelonne in the west and Haironville in the north-west.

Place name

The place name appeared for the first time in 1136 in connection with a monastery Rivi ad Nonas , which was confirmed again in 1371 as Rus les Dames . Rivi and Rus as well as Rupt go back to the word ru = Bach . Thus the place on the brook [Saulx] was owned by a (Benedictine) nunnery. From its foundation in 1793 to 1801, the municipality was called Rupt-sur-Saux .
