history
Ligny was first mentioned in a document in 962 as Lineium . The city developed around a castle that stood near the Tour Valéran from the 11th or 12th century.
Ligny-en-Barrois was the capital of a lordship and later a county that belonged successively to the Counts of Champagne, the Counts of Bar and then a sideline of the Counts of Luxembourg, which from 1371 even occupied the Mainz Erzstuhl with Johann . From 1719 it was part of the Duchy of Lorraine. In 1766 she came to France.
In 1544 Ligny-en-Barrois was besieged and destroyed by the troops of Charles V. From 1544 to 1591 Margaret of Savoy directed the fortunes of the County of Ligny. She had the city built up again.
In the middle of the 18th century, several buildings were erected under Stanislaus Leszczynski , including the Porte Royale, the city hall (Hôtel de ville) and the Porte Dauphine.
In the 19th century Ligny-en-Barrois developed into a center of the optical industry and precision mechanics.
