Peter of Luxembourg (born July 20, 1369 in Ligny-en-Barrois , † July 2, 1387 in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon ) was a French cardinal and bishop of Metz . He was beatified by Pope Clement VII in 1527 and is now one of the city patrons of Avignon . His Catholic feast day is July 2nd .

Life

Peter was the son of Guido of Luxembourg , Count of Ligny-en-Barrois and Mathilde of Châtillon , Countess of Saint-Pol . After the early loss of his parents, he was raised by his aunt Johanna, Countess von Orgières. In 1377 he began his studies at the Collège de Navarre in Paris . In 1378 he became a canon in Paris and in 1381 canon in Cambrai .

At the age of fourteen, Antipope Clement VII appointed him Bishop of Metz in 1384 with the support of the Metz clergy. The Roman-German King Wenceslaus IV , supporter of Pope Urban VI. , campaigned in return for the candidate Tilmann Vuss von Bettemburg . The conflict over the occupation of the bishopric led to violent disputes in the cities of Metz, Boulay and Thionville , in which Tilmann was unable to assert his claims to the office of bishop.

Meanwhile appointed cardinal, the Pope called him to Avignon in 1386, where Peter died ten months later on July 2, 1387 . His funeral took place in the Saint-Michel cemetery. The first attempt at canonization at the Council of Basel from 1431 to 1449 was unsuccessful. The beatification of Peter of Luxembourg only took place on April 9, 1527 by Pope Clement VII.
