Velaines is a French commune with 950 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Bar-le-Duc arrondissement and is part of the canton of Ancerville . The inhabitants are called the Velainois .

geography

Velaines is located 15 kilometers southeast of Bar-le-Duc on the Ornain River and the Canal de la Marne au Rhin . Velaines is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Tronville-en-Barrois in the north and west, Nançois-sur-Ornain in the north, Willeroncourt in the east and north-east, Ligny-en-Barrois in the south and east and Nant-le-Grand in the west and south-west.

The national route 135 runs through the municipality .
