geography
Willeroncourt is located in the historic Barrois landscape in a side valley of the Ornain , about 18 kilometers east-southeast of Bar-le-Duc and about 20 kilometers west-southwest of Commercy . The village of Willeroncourt is located at the confluence of the Ruisseau du Clocher and Ruisseau du Petit Pas streams , which from here form the Ornain tributary Malval , at 260 m above sea level. North and south of the Malval valley floor, the terrain rises by about 120 meters . The partly wooded slopes ( Bois Malval ) stretch up to flattened plateaus, which are partly also wooded ( Bois de Gondormont ). A south-sloping slope immediately north of the village is planted with grapevines. On the plateau southwest of the village, the highest point in the municipality is reached at 386 m above sea level. Here is a 200 m high transmission mast next to a 56 m high radio tower.
Willeroncourt is surrounded by the neighboring communities Erneville-aux-Bois in the north, Nançois-le-Grand in the east, Chanteraine in the south, Ligny-en-Barrois in the southwest and Velaines and Nançois-sur-Ornain in the west.
history
The place appeared for the first time in 1103 in a document as Wuillerumcort . Via Willeruncurt (1180) and Vuilleroncourt (1756) the spelling changed from 1801 to Villeroncourt, which is still used today . Willeroncourt belonged to the Duchy of Bar until the 18th century .
coat of arms
The coat of arms designed by the heraldist RA Louis and only accepted by the community in 2014 is described as follows: “Under the curved golden head of the shield, inside a red boar's head looking to the right, a golden fig leaf in blue, underneath two golden pickaxes shaped like a W against each other. “Willeroncourt was derived from the old German will - the fig leaf symbolizes the will to survive and natural wealth. The pickaxes refer to the earlier local iron ore mining. The boar's head is reminiscent of Basolus von Verzy , the patron saint of the parish.
