Perthois

The Perthois is a historic landscape in the Champagne in France . It forms a fertile triangular plain that is bordered by the Pays du Der landscape in the south and the Argonne in the north . Vitry-le-François is considered to be the capital of Perthois .

location

The Perthois lies between Saint-Dizier and Vitry-le-François and extends over 416 km².

population

The landscape has around 15,000 inhabitants. In it, among other things, the local association of the Communauté de communes du Perthois is located .

economy

In the Perthois, large-scale cereal cultivation plays an important role, as does cattle breeding.

traffic

The Perthois is crossed by the Route nationale 4 ( Paris - Nancy ), the railway lines Paris - Strasbourg and Lille - Dijon as well as the Canal de la Marne au Rhin and the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne .

history

The plain was formed in the Holocene . The name of the landscape is traced back to Perthes , the main town of the pagus Pertenosis in Merovingian times , now a municipality in the Haute-Marne department , which is said to be derived from the Gallic goddess Perta. The Perthois has not formed an administrative unit since the 18th century.
