Gideon S. Ives

Gideon Spraugue Ives (born January 19, 1846 in Dickinson , Franklin County , New York , †  December 20, 1927 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Minnesota.

Career

Gideon Ives attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. During the final years of the Civil War he served in the Union Army . From 1871 he was based in Minnesota, where he held some local offices in St. Peter . Among other things, he was also the legal representative of this community. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . From 1874 to 1878 he served as the district attorney in Nicollet County . Between 1887 and 1890 he sat in the Minnesota Senate , where he served on several committees and in the meantime held the office of President Pro Tempore .

In 1890 Ives was elected lieutenant governor of Minnesota alongside William Rush Merriam . He held this office between 1891 and 1893. He was deputy governor and official chairman of the state senate. He was a member of several organizations and associations and the Freemasons . Gideon Ives was married to Mary Elizabeth Swift, daughter of former Governor Henry Adoniram Swift . He died in Saint Paul on December 20, 1927.
