Franklin County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 51,599 residents and a population density of 12 people per square kilometer. The county seat is in Malone .
geography
Franklin County is located in the northeastern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains , west of Lake Champlain and southeast of the Saint Lawrence River , which touches the county's territory at its northwesternmost corner. The most important settlement areas around Malone are found in the plains in the northern quarter of the county; the remaining areas are characterized by low mountain ranges, sparsely populated and are primarily used for tourism. The highest mountain is the Debar Mountain with 1006 m height. It is north of the largest lake in the region, Saranac Lake . The county covers an area of 4,396 square kilometers, of which 177 square kilometers are water.

history
The county was formed from Clinton County on March 11, 1808 and named after Benjamin Franklin .
One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , Camp Eagle Island . 72 buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 18, 2018).
