The Adirondack Mountains or Adirondacks are a mountain range in the northeastern part of the US state New York . It forms part of the watershed between the Saint Lawrence River and the Hudson River and forms a larger unit with the Laurentine Mountains , north of the Saint Lawrence River. At the eastern end of the Adirondack Mountains are Lake Champlain and Lake George . The southern end of the range is marked by the Mohawk Valley . In the west it is bounded by the Black River . The mountain range is part of the approximately 24,000 km² Adirondack Park , which was placed under the special protection of the state of New York.
Surname
The words Haderondah and Ha-te-en-tox are of Iroquois origin and mean "tree eater". They are the pejorative name of the Iroquois for the Algonquins , who then Adirondack verballhornt was.

The highest mountain of the often forested gneiss and granite ridges of the Adirondack Mountains is Mount Marcy with 1626 m ( location ), according to other information also 1629 m . Other mountains are Mount Haystack ( 1498 m , Lage ) and Mount Skylight ( 1495 m , Lage ). A well-known mountain is Whiteface Mountain ( 1,466 m , location ) near Lake Placid , where the slopes for the alpine ski competitions of the 1980 Winter Olympics were located. With an altitude difference of approx. 1000 m, the longest ski runs on the American continent east of the Rocky Mountains can be found here.
