Black River Falls at Watertown, New York |
The Black River ( English for "black river") is a tributary of Lake Ontario in the northwest of the US state New York .
Origin of name
The Black River is a so-called black water river . The origin of the river name is not clear, but is probably due to the tannic acid , which makes the water of the river very dark in places.
River course
The river has its origin in North Lake in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in the north of the state. It initially flows in a westerly direction, but then turns north when it leaves Kayuta Lake . He then flows through the Forestport Reservoir and flows about 3 km west of Boonville . The river passes through Forestport , Hawkinsville and Port Leyden . At Lyons Falls , the Moose River joins the river from the right. The Black River then passes through Glenfield and flows east past Lowville . Shortly afterwards, the Beaver River meets the river on the right. After flowing through Carthage , the Black River curves to the west. The Fort Drum military base is on the north bank of the river. Great Bend and Black River follow . The Black River flows through the city of Watertown and shortly thereafter Brownville . A few kilometers after Dexter , the Black River reaches Lake Ontario and flows into Black River Bay .

leisure
The river is suitable for fishing. Fish species found in the river include trout , salmon , perch and pike .
Some sections of the river are popular with rafting and kayaking enthusiasts as white water , especially the Black River Gorge , where there is sufficient water even during the summer months.
Environmental problem
After August 10, 2005, the river was contaminated by a leak in a wastewater retention basin of an animal fattening facility near Lowville , causing about 30,000 cubic meters of contaminated wastewater to enter the river. It is estimated that 250,000 fish were killed as a result.
