Lewis County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 27,087 residents and a population density of 8.2 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Lowville .
geography
Lewis County is located in north central New York on the wooded plains of the Tug Hill Plateau; in the east of the county a chain of the Adirondack Mountains runs in a southeasterly direction. The most important watercourses are the Black River , which runs south to north through the county , its right inlet, the Moose River , and the Salmon River, which flows directly into Lake Ontario . The highest point in the county is Gomer Hill at 643 meters.
The county covers an area of 3,341.0 square kilometers, of which 39.6 square kilometers are water.

history
The county was formed from Oneida County on March 28, 1805 and named after Morgan Lewis , a New York governor from 1804 to 1807.
The town “High Market”, which was spun off from Town West Turin on November 11, 1852, was reorganized in 1973 and has not existed since then.
One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Franklin Hough House . 29 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 19, 2018).
