Morgan Lewis (born October 16, 1754 in New York City , † April 7, 1844 ) was an American lawyer , politician and general .

Life

Morgan Lewis was of Welsh descent and the son of Francis Lewis , a signatory to the United States Declaration of Independence . In 1773 he began to study law at the College of New Jersey , later Princeton University . His studies were interrupted by the War of Independence , in which he served as a colonel until the end of the war. In 1779 he married Gertrude Livingston (1757-1833). After completing his studies, he made a career as a lawyer and politician in New York State . He was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1789 to 1792, Attorney General of the state from 1791 to 1792, Judge at the Supreme Court of New York from 1792 to 1801 and at times its chairman.

In 1804 he was finally elected as a candidate for the Democratic Republican Party for governor of New York. He held this office until 1807. Lewis ran again that year, but was defeated by Daniel D. Tompkins .

During the British-American War , Lewis served as Quartermaster General for the US Army. He commanded the American troops in the Battle of Fort George and later became Commander in Chief for the area of Upstate New York . After the war he became politically active again as a state senator . He was also president of the New York Historical Society and co-founder of New York University .

The Lewis County in New York State is named as after the 1844 deceased Morgan Lewis as the cities Lewiston and Lewis .
