Denis O'Brien (born March 13, 1837 in Ogdensburg , New York , † May 18, 1909 in Watertown , New York) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Denis O'Brien's youth were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the Mexican-American War . He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1861, and then began practicing in Watertown, New York. The following years were overshadowed by the civil war. In 1872 he was elected mayor of Watertown. He was elected Attorney General of New York in the 1883 election and was re-elected in 1885. O'Brien held the post from 1884 to 1887. In 1889 he was elected a judge on the New York Court of Appeals and in 1903 he was re-elected. He held the post until the end of 1907 when he reached the constitutional age limit of 70 years. In 1909 he died of appendicitis in his home in Watertown.

His son, John F. O'Brien, was also a judge on the New York Court of Appeals.
