Nathaniel Lawrence

Nathaniel Lawrence (born July 11, 1761 in New York City , † July 5 or July 15, 1797 in Hempstead , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Nathaniel Lawrence, son of Elizabeth Fish and Thomas Lawrence (1733-1816), was born during the reign of King George III. Born in the then still independent city of Newtown (New York), which is now a district in Queens . Nothing is known about his youth. He attended Princeton College but stopped studying to serve as a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War.

In 1788 he took part as a delegate at the New York State Convention , which ratified the United States Constitution. Lawrence was Secretary of the Board of Regents at the University of the State of New York from 1790 to 1794 . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1791, 1792, 1795, and 1796 . From 1792 to 1795 he was Attorney General of New York.

On February 16, 1796, he was appointed Assistant Attorney General in the First District, which included Suffolk County , Queens, Kings County , Richmond County and Westchester County - a post he held until his death.

He was married to Elizabeth Berrien (1762-1800). She was the aunt of US Senator John MacPherson Berrien . The couple had two daughters: Margaret Elizabeth Lawrence, who was married to Philip Lindsley, and Elizabeth Lawrence, who died in childhood.
